Portraiture throughout history often intends to glorify and visually praise individuals by signifying they are worthy of view, worthy of recognition, and worthy of claiming space. Inherent in standards of beauty and traditional art is a preference for “whiteness” and disproportionate and unequal race representation and visibility. These portraits are painted as a protest against, and in opposition to a racial structure that promotes white idealization in portraiture.
